Many of us spend our lives sacrificing our own dreams, time, and energy just to keep our family and society happy. We believe that working hard to provide for others guarantees unconditional love and respect in return. However, Franz Kafka’s story The Metamorphosis reveals an uncomfortable reality: often, what people value is not who you are, but the financial and practical support you provide. The moment your ability to serve disappears, the affection you counted on can vanish almost instantly.
The Day You Stop Being Useful, Watch How Fast Everyone Disappears
I don’t know who I am sharing this with. I know that no one thinks like me. Everyone is busy in life. But what I found in this story, I think you needed to read it. Because understanding is deeper than knowledge. And this story will make you understand something that most people spend their whole life never seeing.
Imagine waking up tomorrow and your family stops talking to you. Your friends stop replying. You lose your job. And the person you thought loved you the most starts ignoring you. What would happen to you?

I just finished a novel called Metamorphosis. A very small book, only 70 to 80 pages. But the story inside will shake you from within.
The Man Who Sacrificed Everything for His Family
Gregor Samsa was a normal middle class boy. And for him, his family was everything. He worked as a salesman. Every morning he left home and every evening he came back. He worked hard every single day for his family. He wanted to give his family a good life.
In the family there was his mother, his father and a younger sister named Grete, whom he loved the most in the world. In the house only Gregor earned. The father did no work. The sister was studying and helping the mother with housework. They all lived in a comfortable apartment. Gregor earned enough that nobody else needed to work. The whole family was living a comfortable life.
But then one day everything changed.
One day he came home as usual. Before sleeping at night he was feeling a little strange. But he was tired so he went to sleep. But the next morning when he opened his eyes something felt very wrong with his body. When he looked at himself he was stunned. His entire body had changed. He had turned into a bug. He thought, what happened to me? Is this some kind of dream? But sadly it was not a dream. He had turned into a cockroach. A vermin.
And the strange thing is that his mind was working exactly the same way as before. Inside he was still Gregor Samsa. But his body was no longer that of a human.
What He Was Thinking While He Lay There
He deliberately closed his eyes for a while so he could not see himself. He was thinking, God, what has happened? What will happen to my family now? What about my dreams?
The truth was that some time ago Gregor’s father’s business had failed and a lot of loan had piled up on him. His family was in trouble. That is why Gregor had taken this job. And after years of hard work he had almost finished paying off the loan and brought his family to a good position. He was about to quit his job and start something of his own on the side. He had already made plans for it and was working on them.
He had sacrificed his youth, his freedom, his happiness, everything for one thing. His family. He wanted to give his family a good life. He wanted to keep them happy.
While he was thinking all this, suddenly his mother’s voice came from outside. Gregor it is 7 o’clock, are you not going to office today? Gregor said, coming mother. But when he gave that answer a strange sound came from his mouth. He thought, what kind of sound is that?
The door was closed so his mother could not tell clearly and she left.
Meanwhile the manager from the company where he worked had come to the area. When the office found out that Gregor had not reached, he came to his home because Gregor had never been late even a single day in his entire job. The manager came, said hello to the parents, sat for a while, talked. Gregor’s mother told him that maybe he is not feeling well today. After waiting for some more time when Gregor did not come out, the manager, his mother, his father and his sister all became a little worried. They came to the door and said, what is the problem, open the door.
And inside Gregor was a bug.
Gregor said, give me one minute, I am not feeling well. He was thinking, should he open the door or not? What would be his parents’ and his boss’s reaction? After gathering a lot of courage Gregor got up, came to the door and slowly opened it.
Everyone was shocked. Nobody could understand who this strange creature standing in front of them was.
Gregor wanted to say something. He wanted to tell them I am Gregor. But before he could speak, the manager ran straight toward the stairs in fear and without looking back ran screaming out of the house.
Gregor panicked. He thought, what will happen now? If my job is gone what will happen to my family? He came out of the room wanting to stop the manager. But the manager had already gone. And right then his father picked up a stick and hissing loudly started chasing him back toward his room. The way we chase an animal. Exactly like that. Gregor could not understand why these people were behaving like this. He kept trying to explain. But nobody was ready to listen. His father pushed him hard from behind. Because of this his thin leg got hurt and he started bleeding. Finally somehow crawling he went back to his room and the door was shut.
The Silence That Followed
Until afternoon nobody came to his room. He was just waiting for someone to come and ask how he was. Because maybe he had some illness that could be cured. He was not harming anyone either. So why was everyone behaving like this?
But nobody came.
Think about it yourself. You are left alone. Everyone runs away from you. They stop talking to you. And all of this happens all at once. How would you feel?
Then in the afternoon after everyone had eaten, his younger sister Grete brought him some milk and bread and left it near him. Gregor loved his sister the most in the whole world. His sister had a hobby of playing the violin. She played it in her free time. But it was just a hobby. Nothing more than that. But Gregor without telling anyone had been quietly saving money. He wanted to get his sister admitted to a big music university. Something she could not even dream of. It was like a dream for her. He wanted to surprise her with this news on the coming Christmas.
So the sister stood there for a little while. Gregor immediately dipped his head into the bowl of milk and started drinking it. Gregor thought about how easily his family was spending life in this beautiful apartment. He wanted to earn more and more and give his family a good life. Keep them happy. But now what will happen?
When the Family Stopped Caring
Days and nights passed like this. Nobody came to meet him. Nobody came to ask about him. Only his little sister Grete gave him food two or three times a day and cleaned his room. Then Gregor’s world became limited only to his room. The door stayed shut and the whole world kept moving outside. He just kept getting food. Sometimes paneer, sometimes milk, chutney, sometimes half rotten vegetables, a piece of bread and a bowl of water.
A few months passed like this. And now even his sister started getting irritated with him. Whenever she saw Gregor’s room open she would shut it so she would not have to see him.
His mother wanted to meet Gregor. Gregor also wanted to meet her. But the mother was not allowed to meet him.
The money in the house slowly started running out. So his father had to go back to work. The mother started doing sewing work. And the sister also took a part time job.
Days started passing. In the beginning his sister took care of him. But now she would leave a lot of food together and go away and nobody would even look at him after that. One day the sister Grete told the mother, let us remove all the furniture from this room. It has no use here. The wardrobe, the chair, the sofa, the table, the photographs.
Gregor did not want this because he was already alone in the room and all these things were the last memories of his old life. His mother did not want this either. But the sister insisted and then the mother and sister Grete started taking all the stuff outside. Slowly the room became empty.
His family’s perspective was not just changing. It was slowly turning into hatred. And Gregor understood this too. Every day sitting inside his room he would listen to his own family talking about him. He realized for the first time that the house whose responsibility he had carried alone for years, today in that very house there was no place for him.
And every day the same one question echoed inside him. Does my existence even have any value without my usefulness?
The Night He Decided to Let Go
Then one evening his sister was playing the violin in the living room. Some tenants had also come to stay in the house because the family needed money. When Gregor heard his sister playing he was moved so much that he could not stop himself. He slowly opened his door and came out into the living room.
The tenants saw him and got startled. They said, what kind of dirty conditions are these. We are going to leave. We will not pay the rent either. After this the sister went to the father and mother and said, this thing has to go. I am not calling it my brother anymore. We did everything we could. Nobody can blame us. But we cannot live like this anymore.
Gregor heard everything.
He crawled back to his room. And that night lying in his room he thought about his family with tenderness and love. His last thought was that his family had to leave him. And he felt that he agreed with that. He felt that he should disappear.
And in the early morning the cleaning lady found Gregor dead.
When the family heard the news the father said, now we can thank God. The sister had become so thin from stress that she almost looked younger. After a while the family took a tram to go out. The father, the mother, the sister. When they reached the edge of the city the mother suddenly said, there is one more thing we need to be thankful for. And the father and sister agreed.
The daughter had bloomed. It was time to think about her marriage.
And that was the end of the story.
What Gregor’s Story Is Actually About
This story is not really about a man turning into a bug. It is about something we see every day but never want to admit.
In this world nobody is truly anyone’s own. Tomorrow you will die. People will come to the funeral. They will stay for half an hour. And then they will say, we have to leave now, we have work. Your family will cry for 5 to 10 days. Your mother will keep crying for a while, keep remembering you. But the point is this. Remove the thought of what will people say from your mind. Live life on your own terms.
And for that what will you have to do? Take responsibility for your own life. Drop expectations from everyone. Parents, society, government, everyone. In this world only those will survive who are strong. Survival of the fittest. The one who is strong will endure.
Take full responsibility for your life. Design your life yourself and live according to it. Earn your own money and your own freedom on your own strength. No expectations from anyone. And this is going to be very difficult. Not easy. Because the moment you try to do this, people will come to pull you back.
As long as you walk on the rotten rules that society has made and everyone is walking on, nobody will say anything to you. The moment you try to do something different, you will be sidelined. You will not be accepted. People will talk behind your back. You will be taunted. You will be treated like an alien. Maybe called crazy too. And these things have happened to me. My own friends who used to roam around with me, eat with me, those same people used to say things behind my back. It felt bad. But what can you do. What is, is.
So you will have to choose the difficult path. Learn skills. Do a part time job. Read. Understand. Know what this world is. Choose the tough path. And when you get close enough that you can comfortably cover your own expenses, then work harder and learn more. Build something big. Earn so much that not a single decision of your life is in someone else’s hands.
Otherwise this society will eat you up.
One Last Important Thing
From everything we understood, do not take from it that society or the world is your enemy and now you have to become completely cold and selfish. No. If you do that what difference will remain between you and everyone else?
You have to become the person who needs nothing from the world. The one who is happy within themselves.
Do not be a beggar. Be like Krishna. If you love someone, say it. Say it. And if the other person does not feel the same, it is okay. They have 50 problems of their own too. Just like you are fighting yours. You do not know what they are going through. Your love alone will not fill their stomach. Give someone a treat, give them coffee, help them a little. But out of compassion, not out of expectations.
If you cannot give someone anything, at least smile and talk to them. Listen to their problems. Because people are full of pain. Every person is fighting 500 things in their mind that we cannot see.
Everyone has a story. Take time to listen. Points of view are different. Events mark people. Circumstances shape people. Everybody’s views are valid.
Gregor kept fulfilling duties. He never lived for himself. And because of that later he had to depend on them. He never recognized his own hidden potential. He stayed there depending on them. He could have gone outside if he wanted. Maybe he would have found others like himself. If he had asked someone outside for help he would have gotten it. He could have been okay. But no. He stayed there.
This is how we keep lying around like cockroaches. Blaming the government, the family and fate. And life gets cut short.
Remember. Trying to make everyone happy will give you nothing. Doing this you will finish your own life and your own freedom.
The world will usually measure your value by your usefulness. Accept this truth. But do not become bitter because of it. Instead fix your life. And whatever you get, share it and stay happy. Be happy within yourself.
Pain is part of growing. Everything in life is temporary. Worrying and complaining changes nothing. Your scars are symbols of your strength. Every little struggle is a step forward. Other people’s negativity is not your problem. What is meant to be will eventually be. The best thing you can do is keep going.
You came naked. You will leave naked. You came without anything. You will leave without anything. So why so much hatred, resentment, envy, selfishness and pride? We will all go empty handed. Everything we have earned, we earned here and we will leave it here only.
Do not be Gregor. Do not wait for the family to accept you. Build yourself so strong that acceptance from others becomes irrelevant.
Because the day you stop being useful, Read how fast everyone disappears.

The lesson here is not to become bitter or stop caring about people, but to stop tying your entire worth to fulfilling other people’s expectations. You must take complete ownership of your life, build real independence, and become content within yourself rather than seeking constant validation. Give support out of genuine compassion, but do not sacrifice your own identity in the process. Build a foundation strong enough that your survival and happiness never depend on whether society finds you useful.
Thank you, and have a great day! 💜
