How Can Schools Showcase Student Achievements in a Modern and Engaging Way?

It can be nearly guaranteed that when you walk through the hallways of almost any school, you’ll likely see similar things such as  dusty cases of trophies, the certificates that are laminated and wrinkle on the edges, the photo collages of years-old graduations.

Such exhibitions were a source of pride in the past. Nowadays, however, they tend to get unrecognized, as old artifacts in an age where children have the ability to carry powerful computers in their pockets and expect the information to be dynamic, searchable and alive.

It is not about whether schools should celebrate their students. Naturally they should. The actual question would be: Are the existing practices really effective?

 The Problem with Traditional Recognition

People find real value in physical trophies that exist as tangible awards because these awards provide physical evidence of their achievements. Conventional displays however have some tangible constraints:

  • Space becomes limited: Physical walls and cases eventually run out of room.
  • Hardware deteriorates: Paper fades, frames crack, and trophies tarnish.
  • Information gets buried: A title of 15 years ago gets buried by the newer stuff, or, worse still, it gets buried completely.

On top of the physical restrictions, there is an engagement issue. Static exhibitions do not tell a story. They do not relate a present-day student with an alumni who attended the same hallways ten years ago. They don’t allow prospective families, perhaps traveling across the state, to explore what a school has been able to offer throughout its history before they walk inside.

Schools also have some rich history which cannot be forgotten and bright futures which cannot be neglected. The dilemma is to come up with a format that honors both.

What Modern Recognition Actually Looks Like

Digital recognition is not a move towards abandoning tradition, but making it louder. Moving a school hall of fame, athletic records, and other educational accomplishments into a digital format will help to make that data not only searchable and shareable but also scalable in a manner that a trophy case could never.

The Interactive Experience

Imagine that your school has a gym lobby with a touchscreen display.

  • One of the students passes by, and he taps the screen to search through championship teams decades ago.
  • When an alumni comes to a reunion, he/she pulls up his/her senior photo.
  • A donor will see his/her named scholarship along with the name of the student that scholarship has supported.
  • That’s not a hypothetical, it’s exactly what a well-designed digital hall of fame makes possible.

The platform offers a single location to display academic awards, artistic performances, student achievements and valedictorian status which capture the entire extent of what a school community has achieved.

Why Engagement Matters More Than Ever

The current generation of students has been brought up in an environment where they have on-demand content. Their attention cannot be just captured by a board of bullets or by a static glass case. But, touchscreen experience? That is another thing.

Interactive screens are exploratory. They allow students to learn about history that they would have not learned otherwise such as:

  • How one Olympian once played on the soccer team of their school.
  • How a current teacher won a state academic competition as a student himself.

These moments of attachment are strong. Passive displays cannot provide them with the ability to build school identity and culture.

The advantages do not just end to student engagement but the benefits extend for school administration as well. An interactive hall of fame is a compelling tool during prospective student visits, alumni events, and donor outreach. It is a good indication that the school places importance on its heritage and that it is investing in the sort of progressive infrastructure that the best students and families desire.

Recognition That Reaches Beyond the Building

Accessibility is one of the least appreciated factors of digital recognition in modern times. Physical exhibitions are restricted to one place. An efficient well built digital platform is not.

The story of school can spread through a touchscreen placed at the main hallway or a mobile version that could be accessed by a prospective family at home and read about the school. Alumni who are dispersed all over the country can reconnect with their roots. Parents will be able to inform their relatives about the success of their child who could not attend the ceremony.

Such access is just unattainable when using a framed certificate on the wall. This type of visibility is priceless to schools that want to improve the relationships with their communities, enhance alumni support or attract donors. Recognition that lives only inside the building remains in the building. Recognition that lives in the cloud goes everywhere.

 Practical Steps Schools Can Take

In case your school is willing to reconsider its approach to student celebrations, the following are a few working places to start:

  • Audit the stuff you have: What records, photos, and other achievements are currently in lock in physical formats? The very gradual process of digitization can give a fresh life to decades of history.
  • Think beyond athletics: There should be an equal place to academic, artistic, and community awards as there is to sports trophies.
  • Involve students: More buy-in and recognition can be achieved through student-led content curation or nomination processes.
  • Choose a platform built to last: Find cloud-based systems that are easy to use in content management, and maintaining the system up to date will not need a specific IT department.

A Legacy Worth Celebrating ,The Right Way

Student performance needs to be more than a showcase. It should have a platform which is as dynamic, connected, and forward-thinking as the students themselves.

Modern digital recognition does not mean the end of tradition, it only keeps it in a more permanent way than a plaque can. It makes history searchable, stories shareable and achievements visible to anybody, anywhere, anytime. In the case of schools that are ready to make that transition, it does not only result in a more impressive show. It is a better society, a more interesting narrative, and a legacy that never  graduates.
